The Parliament has finished going through the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2022. They paused the final reading of the bill for now. This break will allow the committee and sponsors to coordinate their work and consider it again if needed. Despite previous delays, Parliament is now focusing on this bill. The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, said they aimed to finish discussing it by Friday, February 9, 2024. To ensure this, Parliament has dedicated significant time to discussing the bill, even putting other matters aside.
The bill aims to uphold traditional family values and prohibits activities related to LGBTQ+ rights, with penalties included. The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, stated that if the President doesn't approve the bill after it passes, Parliament will override his decision using its constitutional powers. There are concerns that the President might not approve the bill, given his past actions on similar bills.
